Electronic Poetry: How to Approach It?
Understanding Poetry in the Digital Environment.
Abstract : This article is an adaptation of the second chapter of Giovanna di Rosario’s PhD thesis entitled Electronic Poetry. Understanding Poetry in the Digital Environment. The aim of the thesis is to describe how new media affect poetry created in digital environment (“digital born poetry”).The goal of the thesis is a two-fold goal. On the one hand to categorize electronic poems in order to make them more approachable and understandable as objects of study; and on the other it is to provide those who are interested in this new area of study with a sort of critical anthology of electronic poetry. In this article the author first briefly reviews some of the most significant theories concerning electronic writing (such as for instance, Aarseth’s concept of cybertextuality, Hayles’ definition of technotext, and Bootz’s idea of transitoire observable). She proposes a methodology to be used in the analyses of the electronic poems focusing on the limits of the semiotic approach and its challenges. The author is interested in the specificity of this “genre” and she proposes a categorization of electronic poetry based on two axes. One axis focuses on the general regularity of the form of expression (Louis Hjelmslev). The other axis categorizes the e-poems according to the level of interaction with the reader. She is particularly interested in seeing if and how electronic poetry uses/adapts/reinvents rhetorical figures, tropes, and aesthetics – the “canonical elements” that characterize poetry. This article aims to put forward a methodology in order to study the “new writing space” that the digital medium offers to its poets. After Mallarmé and during the last century many experiments with the writing space (and typography) have been done. What are the new elements introduced by electronic poetry to these experiments? How should we adapt and rethink our methodology in order to understand digital poetry?
