Abstract : The analysis proposed in this text takes its place in a work of “cultural criticism”, which usually endeavours to determine the responsibility of the culture in the process of political and intellectual evolution. It is argued that the total work of art, which becomes an undemocratic fantasy in Wagner, is a condition of possibility of totalitarian domination in the twentieth century. The demonstration is based on the recovery of the Wagnerian project in the field of architecture, especially during the era of expressionism. It aims to explain the special affinity between Nazi totalitarianism and the art of building.
