À sept siècles de distance et par une traduction au pied de la lettre – ce qui est la coutume de la vulgate académique et scolaire –, ces quatre adjectifs résonnent aux oreilles contemporaines comme des termes archaïques sinon mystérieux ; ils ne rendent pas compte de la richesse d’argumentation que Dante déploie pour en arriver à la conception d’une langue qui s’impose par le « gratioso lumine rationis », faisant fonction d’un prince absent, facteur souhaité d’unification linguistique. On propose dès lors les qualités d’une langue « lumineuse, centrale, chorale et responsable » comme traduction plus fidèle aux attentes de Dante, une version certes plus risquée, mais confortée dans cette tâche par les essais d’Yves Bonnefoy sur la traduction de la poésie. A sette secoli di distanza e con una traduzione letterale – cosa ricorrente nella vulgata accademica e scolastica –, questi quattro aggettivi suonano alle orecchie contemporanee come termini arcaici, se non arcani; essi non rendono conto della ricchezza di argomenti che Dante sviluppa per arrivare finalmente alla concezione di una lingua che si imponga ad opera del « gratioso lumine rationis », supplente d’un principe assente, fautore sperato di unione linguistica. Si propongono dunque le qualità di una lingua « luminosa, centrale, corale e responsabile » come traduzione più fedele alle aspettative di Dante, versione certo non priva di rischi, ma incoraggiata in questo tentativo dai saggi di Yves Bonnefoy sulla traduzione della poesia.
